What can I find using the LaGuardia Library Research toolbar?
The toolbar is most helpful for finding books. The idea behind it is that as you find books during the course of your regular online searching, you have a quick mechanism to see if it's something in LaGuardia's collection.
Do I have to use Firefox?
You don't have to use Firefox to use the toolbar, but it's optimized for Firefox. There is a beta version of the toolbar for the Chrome browser, though.
Does the toolbar work with Google Scholar?
The toolbar does some things with Google Scholar. First, you must have your local machine set up to use Google Scholar (details can be found here). Then, while using Google Scholar, if you come upon a subscription page you cannot access, right click on the page, and then select Reload <URL> via LaGuardia Community College, which will let you see if LaGuardia can provide access through the page. You can also highlight text, right click on it, and then run a search of the highlighted text through Google Scholar, which is helpful for looking up citations.
What's the difference between searching CUNY+ (LaGuardia) and CUNY+ (all of CUNY)?
Searching CUNY+ (LaGuardia) searches LaGuardia's local holdings. If we don't have a book in our local collection, you can search all of CUNY and have a book sent to LaGuardia using CLICS.
If I click the LaGuardia icon and it says there's no book, does it really mean you don't have the book?
Not necessarily. Sometimes we'll have a newer or older edition of the book you searched and that different edition won't show up in the Research Toolbar search since it has a different ISBN number. To be on the safe side, if you get a message we don't have holdings, do a quick title search to double-check. While you're searching, consider seeing if anyone in CUNY has the book and then requesting it be sent here via CLICS.
What sites does the Research Toolbar work with?
It works with most major booksellers like Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com, and eCampus.com. While there's no list of compatible sites yet, if you click on the title of a book and see an apple, you know it works with the toolbar.
How do I uninstall the toolbar?
Select the LibX entry from your Add-ons list. Click "Remove" option and restart Firefox.
Uninstall the Internet Explorer version using the Windows Add or Remove Programs menu, selecting LibX for IE.
