A Guide to the Library for New Faculty and Staff Members

Over 360,000 books. This is the link to the catalog. The link is also on our home page. You can search for books and other materials throughout the entire CUNY system. We also have an ever-increasing number of electronic books (over 150,000), many of which can be downloaded. E-books will show up in the catalog with a format of Electronic Resource. You can also search them through a separate interface.

Over 66,000 magazines and journals. The Library has an extensive collection of databases, accessible on campus or off. Many of our subscription collections are CUNY-wide purchases, so lots of the databases you loved in graduate school, like JSTOR, Project MUSE, and ScienceDirect, you can continue to love here at LaGuardia (it also helps you understand how your students are doing their research here). When you use a database from off campus your login and password are the same as for your GroupWise account. We also subscribe to many titles in paper form.

Find material beyond LaGuardia. CLICS (CUNY Libraries Inter-Campus Services) lets you have books sent from any campus to any other campus for pick-up and return. Find the item in the catalog, go to the Holdings screen and click on the Request this Copy link to use this service. Details are here.

If you need a book that's not available in CUNY or an article not available here at LaGuardia, you can use interlibrary loan, also known as ILLiad, to obtain a copy. If you don't have a LaGuardia ILLiad account, you'll need to create one. Once you have an ILLiad account, you can effortlessly request articles using the Find It! (Find it! icon) button found in Library databases (details are here). Your LaGuardia ID also gives you on site access to any CUNY library.

Electronic Reserves. You may place articles, practice tests, book chapters and other materials on reserve electronically for your students to read on any computer with Internet access, either on campus or at home. The link is on our home page under Services. Faculty members can manage their own accounts, create courses and place materials on Reserve. If you have any materials you would like to place on reserve, please contact Chris McHale, cmchale@lagcc.cuny.edu, x5441 or drop the material off at the Circulation Desk, Room E-101.

RefWorks. This citation management program is available to you from the Library's database page and citation pages. Once you have created an account you will be able to use RefWorks from off campus. The Library also subscribes to EasyBib, which your students might find helpful. That is also linked on our citation page.

Class instruction. You may schedule a time for your class to meet with a librarian for help with library research. The request form is on the web page at library.laguardia.edu/services/instruction or call Galina Letnikova or Bokul Bahar at x5476. We’re happy to teach you students everything from database searching to formulating a research topic to evaluation of sources. All ENG101 classes are automatically scheduled for a Library class.

Suggest a book for purchase. You can contact Louise Fluk, Collection Development Librarian, by phone (718-482-5424) or email (fluk@lagcc.cuny.edu). Books that support the College's curriculum and mission are given priority.

Portable laptop wireless classroom. The Media department in the Library has laptops for classroom use. If you are not in a Smart Classroom and need computer access for a lesson, you can request delivery of a cartload of laptops. The request form is here. Faculty can also borrow laptops for their own use.

Ask Us! You are always welcome at the Reference Desk, which is open whenever the Library is. And if you can't get to the Reference Desk, click the Email the Library for research help link on the home page, and submit your question via email. Someone usually responds in less than a day.

Videos. Not only does our Media Services have lots of great physical materials, but there's also electronic access to video. Our streaming server is only available on-campus but has some content that you and your students will appreciate. The link to our streaming server can be found here and under Services. Some of our databases, like American History in Video, also have video content.
